Praying Scripture

After my sophomore year of college I accepted a student ministry internship that provided some of the most molding years of my life in regards to my walk with God. My trajectory was forever changed. During the internship I was discipled under two men that gave me spiritual meat to eat when it came to God, His Word and the spiritual disciplines Jesus practiced on earth. As I have walked many dark days this foundation God gave me through the student ministry internship proved to be monumental. This was a pivitol time that God reinforced in my heart for making His name known to others. As interns we were discipled through Romans to give us an understanding of theology and then through Acts as a practice of the forward movement of that theology into the world.  I was able to see a model of living in such a way to maximize ministry to people for the sake of God’s name. I was encouraged and held accountable to do the same. During these summers the idea of praying scripture was introduced to me. Since then it has become a source of life and renewal. You simply can’t go wrong when praying scripture. I find so much life in the words of scripture. It teaches the dark side of my heart truth and moves in me for transformation.

I would highly recommend doing this. It’s super simple and there is nothing fancy about it. Basically what I do is take the scripture that stood out to me during my time with the Lord and pray that over myself, over the world, over others; however it apples! I can’t explain how it ties my heart to God’s heart. It aligns my will with his and it subdues my flesh.  It also causes me to pray crazy big prayers that seem unrealistic and unreasonable. It’s good- really good.

Lately here are scriptures that I cling to and pray often.

1 Peter 5:6-11

xHumble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,7 ycasting all your anxieties on him, because zhe cares for you. 8 aBe sober-minded; bbe watchful. Your cadversary the devil dprowls around elike a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 fResist him, gfirm in your faith, knowing thaththe same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And iafter you have suffered a little while, the God of all

grace, jwho has called you to his keternal glory in Christ, will himself lrestore, mconfirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 nTo him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:14-21

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom wevery family3 in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to xthe riches of his glory yhe may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spiritzin your inner being, 17 aso that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being brooted and cgrounded in love, 18 may have strength to dcomprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and eheight and depth,19 and to know the love of Christ fthat surpasses knowledge, that gyou may be filled with all hthe fullness of God.

20 iNow to jhim who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, kaccording to the power at work within us, 21 lto him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
